SDI Honors All Military Students With Special Armed Forces Day Donation
Sonoran Desert Institute is a school that is comprised of a great deal of active duty military members — that’s something we’re very proud of.
With Armed Forces Day coming up Saturday, May 16, we felt that a simple “thank you” to those serving wasn’t going to be enough.
In honor of those who serve on our behalf, keeping our country safe, SDI has made a donation of $1,525 to the Fisher House Foundation. That’s five dollars for every active duty military student we have as of May 2020.
The Fisher House Foundation “builds comfort homes where military & veterans families can stay free of charge, while a loved one is in the hospital,” per their website.
They served more than 32,000 families in 2019, and more than 400,000 since they began their mission. They also run the Hero Miles program, where they accept donated frequent flyer miles. They have helped donate more than $100,000,000 worth of flights to families in need. They also operate a Hotels for Heroes program that operates similarly, but with hotel points. They help manage a grant program to assist other military charities and obtain scholarship funds for “military children, spouses, and children of fallen and disabled veterans.”
To make a long story short, they are warriors and heroes, too.
In addition to our gift, David Coker, president of the foundation, was able to let us know that an anonymous donor matched what we donated, bringing the combined contribution up to $3050.
We’re honored to take the chance to participate in something bigger than ourselves, and we urge you to do the same. You can access their donation page here. For our guardsmen, soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, and their families, let’s make Armed Forces Day special.
