Our Field Studies programs exposes you to training, resources, and experiences that will help you advance your career in the firearms industry.

Field Studies

At the School of Firearms Technology, it’s our goal to offer the best distance education possible to our students. Now we’re taking that a step further. Through exclusive partnerships across the country, the School of Firearms Technology is offering select students on-site Field Study programs at no cost to the student. Only the most exemplary students will qualify for these hands-on training sessions, which will offer both professional-level instruction and invaluable networking. We hope to offer even more Field Study opportunities in the future as we continue to grow our Partnership network!

To Apply For A Field Study:

In order to apply for a active Field Study a student must have completed the first two semesters of either the Advanced Gunsmithing Certificate or Associate Science Firearms Technology Degree.

1. Submit the SDI Field Study Application and select the Field Study location for which you’d like us to submit your application.

Current Field Study Opportunities:

Aklys Defense
Location: Baton Rouge, LA. Length: 3 weeks. The student will work with industry professionals in Baton Rouge, LA and learn the ins and outs of the AR-15 platform, AK-47, ZK-22 and information about integrally suppressed firearms. For more information, please email FieldStudy@sdi.edu.

Coyote Creek Armory
Location: Stamping Ground, KY. Length: 4 weeks. The student will work with industry professionals in Stamping Ground, KY. You will help repair revolvers, semi-auto pistols, shotguns, bolt action and semi-auto rifle. You will help build precision rifles on the REM 700 action, Savage actions, Mosin Nagant action, and Schmidt-Rubin K31 actions. Dip Stick Coatings
Location: Anderson, SC. Length: 3 weeks. For more information, please email FieldStudy@sdi.edu.

Fire4Effect Weapon Systems
Location: El Paso, TX. Length: 3 weeks. For more information, please email FieldStudy@sdi.edu.

Fortress Firearms Manufacturing LLC.
Location: Petersburg, WV. Length: OPEN. This Field Study is offered to all SDI students and graduates. During this field with Fortress Firearms manufacturing the student will work with a Master Gunsmith, Welder, Machinist, CNC Machinist, and CNC Programmer in Petersburg, WV. The student will learn an in-depth study of the materials and processes involved in Solid Works-CAD, FeatureCam-CAM, refinishing, barreling, threading, chambering, trigger jobs and work with a stock duplicator. Head Down Products
Location: Dallas, GA. Length: 3 weeks. The student will work with industry professionals in Dallas, GA and learn how to build and customize AR-15, LR.308 and Glock platforms in a successful veteran-run gunsmithing shop. For more information, please email FieldStudy@sdi.edu.

Heritage Gunworks
Location: Lakewood, CO. Length: 3 weeks. For more information, please email FieldStudy@sdi.edu.

Joel Schafer – Stockmaker
Location: Alliance, NE. Length: 1 week. The student will work with Mr.Joel Schafer, learning the detail and skill in Checkering firearms. Student is required to come with a completed gunstock, finish applied. Joel will supply checkering cradles for the student to use while in shop. Kahr Firearms Group
Location: Worcester, MA. Length: 8 weeks. 2nd 4 weeks PAID. Kahr Firearms Group Location: Worcester, MA. Length: 8 weeks with 2nd 4 weeks PAID. The student will work with Industry professionals in Worcester, MA in the following areas: Customer Service, Product Assembly and Polishing. Customer Service and Product Assembly stages will consist of the student repairing and assembling all Kahr and Auto-Ordnance firearms to include Kahr semi auto pistols, Auto-Ordnance M1 carbine, Thompson “Tommy Gun” rifle and 1911 pistols. The student will also be exposed to, and trained on, polishing processes and techniques. This field study will be 4 weeks with a 2nd term of 4 weeks PAID. Mesa Kinetic Defense
Location: Gonalez, LA. Length: 3 weeks. The student will work with industry professionals in Gonzales, LA and learn how to run a retail gun store, the ins and outs of the AK-47/74 variant platform, metal work and firearms coatings. For more information, please email FieldStudy@sdi.edu.

Moriarti Armaments
Location: Miami, FL. Length: 4 weeks. For more information, please email FieldStudy@sdi.edu.

Moss Pawn
Location: Atlanta, GA. Length: 3 weeks. For more information, please email FieldStudy@sdi.edu.

Northside Gun Shop
Location: Columbia, TN. Length: 4 weeks. The student will work with Industry professionals in Columbia, TN on how to successfully run and manage a Gun Shop along with various Gunsmithing operations in house. For more information, please email FieldStudy@sdi.edu.

Quarter Circle 10, LLC.
Location: Tucson, AZ. Length: 4 weeks. For more information, please email FieldStudy@sdi.edu.

Rivers Edge Tactical
Location: Valley City, OH. Length: 3 weeks. For more information, please email FieldStudy@sdi.edu.

Sons of Liberty
Location: San Antonio, TX. Length: 3-4 weeks. The student will work with Industry professionals in San Antonio, TX and learn an in-depth study of the materials involved in the construction of the AR-15 and AR-10 as well as practice in the assembly and dissasembly of the AR platform. Taurus Holdings Inc.
Location: Miami Lakes, FL. Length: 4 weeks. This Field Study is offered to SDI Florida Residents ONLY. During this paid Field Study opportunity, the student will work with industry professionals in Miami Lakes, FL and learn an in-depth study of the materials involved in the construction of gun manufacturing as well as practice in the repair department.
