Leadership Built on Experience
Jarred McNeely brings a rare combination of hands-on expertise and executive-level leadership to his role as Chief Academic Officer at Sonoran Desert Institute. With over a decade of experience in higher education and a background rooted in military service, Jared’s path reflects the very values SDI instills in its students: adaptability, technical skill, and a passion for continuous learning.
A former non-commissioned officer in the U.S. Army, Jarred’s passion for training and mentorship began during his time in uniform—where he thrived on building up those around him. That passion carried over into civilian life, leading him to complete degrees in criminal justice, organizational leadership, and gunsmithing.
Over time, Jarred’s career in education grew from the classroom to the executive suite. He has served as a program director, dean, vice president, and now leads SDI’s academic mission, ensuring the school remains student-focused, industry-relevant, and forward-thinking.
“I loved working with my hands, but I found I loved even more helping others find their own path through technical education,” Jarred shared on the podcast.
At SDI, Jarred is focused on making technical careers in firearms technology and uncrewed aerial systems accessible and achievable—especially for veterans and active-duty service members who are ready to build a future with their skills.
Why SDI Fits the Veteran Mindset
From the start, SDI’s approach to education clicked with Jarred.
“I loved training my soldiers. I realized I could still teach—just in a new capacity.”
SDI’s programs are designed for people who learn by doing. Whether it’s assembling a firearm or operating a drone, SDI delivers hands-on learning through an innovative online format—with real tools shipped directly to students.
The school’s course structure offers flexibility, with new classes starting every five weeks and multiple pacing options for full- or part-time learners.
Programs That Align with Real-World Skills
SDI currently offers five programs:
Firearms Technology
- Certificate in Handgun Specialist (16 Credits / One 20-Week Semester)
- Certificate in Firearms Technology – Gunsmithing (32 Credits / Two 16-Week Semesters)
- Associate of Science in Firearms Technology (60 Credits / Four 16-Week Semesters)
Uncrewed Aerial Systems (Drones)
- Certificate in Uncrewed Technology – Aerial Systems (16 Credits / One 20-Week Semester)
- Associate of Science in Uncrewed Technology (60 Credits / Four 20-Week Semesters)
Each program is designed to build technical proficiency while giving students the chance to earn a credential that leads to employment or further study. And because SDI is DEAC-accredited, students have access to financial aid and veteran education benefits. SDI’s programs are approved for use of most VA and TA military education benefits, and Federal Student Aid (FSA) is available to eligible students.
How Hands-On Learning Works at a Distance
One of the most unique aspects of SDI is its online plus physical kit hybrid model.
Students complete theoretical coursework through the school’s online platform and receive kits with tools, parts, and materials needed for hands-on assignments. They then submit photos or videos of their work to faculty for grading and feedback.
“It’s a lab in your living room,” Jarred explained. “You’re still building. You’re still working with your hands. You’re just doing it from wherever you are.”
This model has made SDI an ideal fit for active-duty service members, veterans, and civilians alike—especially those looking to stay hands-on while learning remotely.
Career Services, Industry Pathways, and Transfer Options
Jarred also touched on SDI’s Career Services department, which actively works with employers to identify openings and share them with students and graduates. While job placement isn’t guaranteed, SDI works hard to create opportunities and provide support.
In addition, SDI has articulation agreements with schools like Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and American Public University System, giving graduates a clear path to pursue a bachelor’s degree if they choose. Visit the SDI About page for a full list of SDI policies, including re-enrollment and transfer credit policies.
A Word for Fellow Veterans
Jarred closed the conversation with a message for those who served:
“Education is something that can’t be taken away from you. Whether it’s with SDI or elsewhere, find something you care about, learn everything you can, and serve in a new way.”
