We are proud to announce that Traci Lee, President of Sonoran Desert Institute (SDI), has been honored as the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC) Person of the Year. This award is the DEAC’s highest recognition of individual achievement, honoring visionary leaders whose work has made a lasting impact on distance education and quality assurance through accreditation.

Since 2016, Traci has led SDI with a focus on academic excellence, regulatory integrity, student satisfaction, and institutional growth. Her leadership has been instrumental in expanding SDI’s program offerings and enhancing its reputation as a provider of accessible, career-focused education in firearms and uncrewed technology.

In addition to her leadership at SDI, Traci has made significant contributions to the DEAC. She served two consecutive three-year terms on the Commission and held multiple officer roles on the Board’s Executive Committee, including serving as Chair during her final year. Her dedication and insight have helped shape the Commission’s work in advancing quality and innovation in distance learning.

The DEAC Person of the Year Award, established in 1961, celebrates individuals whose vision and scholarly work have significantly influenced the field of distance education. Traci’s extensive experience and dedication to student success exemplify the qualities this award seeks to recognize.

In her acceptance speech, Traci shared:

“Thank you very much. Over the past six years on the commission, I’ve learned so much. It has been incredibly rewarding. I’ve had the opportunity to meet with many schools and connect with so many amazing people. After working in education since the mid-80s, I thought I had seen it all, but I quickly realized there was still so much to learn. This experience has helped me grow in ways I didn’t expect, and I’ve learned a great deal from all of you. Thank you again. This means more to me than you know.”

Traci’s career spans senior leadership roles at institutions such as Bridgepoint Education, Career Education Corporation, MedVance Institute, University of Advancing Technology, and University of Phoenix. She has also provided consulting services through TALEE Solutions and Campus Management Corporation. Her expertise includes campus startups, international operations, and navigating complex regulatory environments.
