Today is May 8!
May 8 holds a special place in the hearts of military historians, veterans, and just in-general fans of freedom; in addition to being Military Spouse Appreciation Day (thank you, all!), it’s Victory in Europe Day.
Today marks the 75th anniversary of Allied efforts successfully ending the war in Europe.
I’m told by Wedding Anniversary By Years that the 75th anniversary is definitely a diamond anniversary.
V-E Day marks with joy the hard work and sacrifice endured by tens of millions of men, women, and children who suffered under and against the Nazi war machine. On this day, 75 years ago, we won.
“My dear friends, this is your hour,” Winston Churchill, the man who helped guide the waning British Empire through its greatest struggle, said at the time. “We may allow ourselves a brief period of rejoicing.”
The Telegraph reports that more than one million people poured out into the British streets at the time.
The Americans were celebrating with just as much zeal.
Everyone involved knew that the war with Japan was yet to see its conclusion, but for one day, at least, the Allies rejoiced.
So, 75 is a significant number. How do we celebrate today?
As you might imagine, there was a fair amount of festivities on the docket for the 75th anniversary of V-E Day. In fact, the U.K. actually moved a bank holiday back several days so that it could coincide with the occasion. However, due to the need to reduce mass gatherings in the fight against COVID-19, the vast majority of organized events have been cancelled.
As we all mark the date, I encourage you to take the U.K.’s Pageantmaster for VE Day 75’s advice:
We are … encouraging all those taking part to undertake the “Nation’s Toast to the Heroes of WW2” at 3pm on the 8th May, from the safety of their own home by standing up and raise a glass of refreshment of their choice and undertake the following “Toast” – “To those who gave so much, we thank you,” using this unique opportunity to pay tribute to the many millions at home and abroad that gave so much to ensure we all enjoy and share the freedom we have today.
Give thanks. Honor a veteran. Remember that today’s free world came at a price, and they paid it for us.
