At the time of the battle (December 26, 1776), the Americans desperately needed a win. Morale was low, and there was a very real chance the bulk of George Washington’s army would leave him at the turn of the new year.
Washington needed something convincing to keep a sizeable portion of his troops intact.
I won’t spoil too much of the podcast for you, but this is where we get Washington’s famous Crossing of the Delaware, forever immortalized in the photo below:
