For many of us, we don’t need a day to commemorate 9/11. We’ll always have the memory burned vividly into our minds. But there are 20 year olds today who weren’t even born when 9/11 happened, and this is a day for them. This is a post to commemorate Patriots Day 2022 and explain what Patriot Day is.
What is Patriot Day?
For those that don’t remember, 9/11 occurred on a Tuesday. The Friday after that, then-President George W. Bush declared 9/14 a national day of prayer and remembrance. This was the first time an American political figure designated a date to memorialize the event.
It wouldn’t be the last time, though. Congress introduced a bill in October of 2001 to designate September 11 as a national day of mourning, which resulted in the creation of the first Patriot Day. During both of the next American presidencies (Obama and Trump for those of you who were too busy having fun to pay attention to politics), both affirmed that September 11 would be a national day of mourning. Both presidents also sponsored memorial events during the days surrounding 9/11.
Patriots Day 2022: Remembering 9/11
As a national day of remembrance, Patriots (or Patriot) Day commemorates the 9/11 attacks. US Federal Government buildings fly their flags at half mast around the world. In addition, they observe a moment of silence at 8:46 AM Eastern Time, when the first plane (American Airlines Flight 11) hit the North Tower. However, it’s important to note that Patriot Day is not a holiday. We’re not celebrating anything. Instead, we’re remembering a moment in time that completely changed the course of history and our country.
Unfortunately 9/11 is the kind of event that never really leaves someone’s mind. But on Patriot Day, don’t just remember it: we never forget 9/11.
