Creating an Effective eLearning Environment: Online and IRL

  • Jack Collins

Online learning has a lot of benefits. For example, you don’t need to worry about putting on real pants and you can attend class in your pajamas from the waist down. However, to really get the most out of your online learning experience, you need to set up an effective eLearning environment. Here are some ways to do that!

Creating an Effective Online Learning Environment

Use an Entire Room (If Possible)

There’s a reason that we’ve historically used classrooms for learning. Having a room dedicated to your studies helps kickstart your brain in “learning mode.” If you can’t dedicate an entire room to your online classes, don’t worry! Try to set up a specific corner of your bedroom or living room as your eLearning space. Even a desk, chair, and a few furnishings can do the trick!

Pick Somewhere Quiet

One great thing about in-person classes is that you have an entire room of students doing the same thing you are. That can lead to significantly fewer distractions than if you were left to your own devices. Try to set up your eLearning area somewhere away from noises and distractions. Choose somewhere away from shared areas, kitchens, and the street.

Stay On Task

Piggybacking off of our last point, do everything in your power to stay on-task while you’re studying. If you’re like me, the internet is the biggest distraction out there. To help avoid its siren’s call, place messages around your study area to keep yourself focused. Even a simple whiteboard with a message like “study between 4:00 and 7:00” can help keep you on-task!
