TEMPE, AZ (Oct. 28, 2024) – Members of Sonoran Desert Institute’s staff teamed up at the Arizona National Guard’s Eighth Annual Suicide Prevention Community Resource Fair and Kickball Tournament at Papago Park Military Reservation Friday, October 25, 2024.

“The annual Arizona National Guard Kickball Tournament and Resource Fair is a community event aimed at raising awareness about suicide prevention within the military community,” said Havilah McMeans, Military and Veterans Services (MVS) Representative for SDI. “The statistics for veteran suicide are alarmingly high, so it is crucial to remind our service members that they are not alone and that resources — and people who care — are available to support them.”

About 15 members from Team SDI participated in the kickball tournament rocking their “Remember Everyone Deployed” shirts. SDI also hosted a booth for the resource fair – meeting attendees and highlighting SDI’s dedication to the military and veteran community.

“SDI attends these events to serve those who are serving for us,” said Christian Sequerra, SDI’s Event Coordinator. “SDI appreciates what the military community does for our country and whatever we can do to show our support, we try to be there.”

McMean’s states that MVS representatives work directly with these communities to ensure they are informed about the opportunities available, whether they’re considering furthering their education or exploring new career paths. Additionally, MVS collaborates with installation leaders, attends on-base events and education and transition counselors, and fosters partnerships with organizations that support military members to ensure that their specific needs are met.

“SDI holds deep respect and appreciation for our military and veteran population,” said McMeans. “We recognize their unique sacrifices, skills, and dedication, and we are committed to supporting them as they transition to civilian life or further their careers. We aim to create a community that not only empowers military-connected individuals but also shows unwavering regard for their service and contributions every day.”
