Tempe, AZ — Sonoran Desert Institute (SDI) is excited to announce the return of 1911-specific education with the FTE 211 1911 Advanced Armorer course. The course returns after time spent on hiatus.

“The return of the 1911 course is something that has been sought after since I began with SDI,” says Jarred McNeely, Chief Academic Officer. “We have overcome many obstacles and aligned with new partners to be able to once again offer this course which provides a historical firearm design that is still relevant today.”

This course presents a comprehensive overview of 1911-style firearms. Students will discuss the history, development, and practical applications of 1911-style firearms, including their parts, functionality, ammunition, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair.

Also presented are sight options, a tuning guide, and considerations for customizing the 1911. A build kit will be provided to the student to demonstrate the topics learned in the course.

FTE 211 is an elective option that is available for students enrolling in either the Associate of Science in Firearms Technology or the Certificate in Firearms Technology – Gunsmithing programs. Students in both programs will now be able to choose from 1911 Advanced Armorer, Modern Sporting Rifle, Pump Shotgun Armorer, and Developing a Business Plan for their elective, depending on their eligibility. Eligibility is based on the student’s age and their state’s restrictions.

McNeely continues, “The handgun market is a broad market for gunsmiths. The 1911 provides a sound perspective to enter this portion of the firearms technology industry. We are excited to see this course again be offered to our students.”
